Dental Implant FAQ — 12 Honest Answers
Pain, timelines, diabetes, aftercare, success rates, smoking and travel — the questions patients actually ask Dr. Shilpa Yadav, answered plainly, with no sales pitch attached.
Pain, timelines & who's a candidate
Is the implant procedure painful?
The implant site is fully numbed with local anaesthesia, so the procedure itself is not painful. Mild soreness for 1–2 days afterward is normal and managed with standard pain relief — most patients describe it as far more comfortable than they expected.
How long does a dental implant take?
The implant placement itself typically takes 30–60 minutes per tooth. The full process — placement, healing (osseointegration), and final crown — usually spans 3–6 months, though healing time varies by individual.
Can diabetic patients get dental implants?
In most cases, yes — well-controlled diabetes is not a barrier to implant treatment. Dr. Shilpa will review your medical history and coordinate on timing to ensure safe healing.
Is there an age limit for getting a dental implant?
There's no fixed upper age limit — what matters is bone health and overall fitness for a minor procedure, not age on its own. Patients well into their 70s and 80s can be good candidates when bone quality and general health support it.
Is an implant better than a bridge?
For most patients, yes — an implant is the only option that preserves jawbone and doesn't require filing down healthy neighbouring teeth. A bridge can still be the right call in specific clinical situations, which Dr. Shilpa will walk you through. See the full comparison →
Aftercare, success & what-ifs
What should I eat on Day 1 after an implant?
Stick to soft, cool-to-lukewarm foods — yoghurt, khichdi, soups, mashed vegetables. Avoid hot, spicy, hard or crunchy food and drinking through a straw for the first 24 hours.
What is the success rate of dental implants?
Dental implants have one of the highest success rates in modern dentistry — commonly cited in dental literature at 95%+ over 10 years for patients with good bone quality and health. Your own odds depend on bone health, oral hygiene and whether you smoke, assessed honestly before any treatment is recommended.
How do I care for an implant long-term?
Brush and floss exactly as you would your natural teeth, and keep up regular check-ups so any early gum inflammation around the implant is caught and treated before it becomes a bigger problem.
What happens if an implant fails?
Implant failure is uncommon but not impossible — usually linked to infection, insufficient bone integration, or uncontrolled gum disease. If it happens, the implant can typically be removed, the site allowed to heal, and a new implant placed once conditions are right.
Does smoking affect implant success?
Yes — smoking measurably slows healing and raises the risk of implant failure by reducing blood flow to the healing bone. This is discussed honestly at your consultation rather than skipped past.
Can I travel or fly soon after implant surgery?
Short domestic travel a few days after placement is usually fine once any numbness and swelling has settled. For longer flights, most dentists suggest waiting until the initial healing phase is past — Dr. Shilpa will give you a timeline specific to your own procedure.
About the clinic
Do you serve patients from Gurugram?
Yes — the clinic sits right on the Aya Nagar–Gurugram border on the Yellow Line Metro corridor, and a large share of implant patients travel in from DLF Phase 1–3, Sikanderpur and MG Road.
